Alone Together: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?
Event Date: March 18, 2021
Event Description:
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Art Historian Katherine Zoraster will give a brief overview of history of women in the arts.
Taking the title from Linda Nochlin’s landmark article that countered previous wide held beliefs that women historically were just not as capable and talented as a starting off point, this lecture will address some of the socio-economic and cultural reasons as to why history depicts a lack of great women artists. Having been overlooked, this article encouraged a reconsideration of Art History and the identification and reattribution of many women in the arts. This lecture will address the article at the start and then give a brief overview highlighting several women artists contextually through European history. Some of the artists to be touched on will include Judith Leyster, Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’ Keefe, among others.
Katherine Zoraster is a contextual art historian working as a lecturer at several local colleges, currently specializing in adult learning through a variety of lifelong learning programs. In addition, she also teaches Art History in the full-time artist program at the Los Angeles Academy of the Figurative Arts. She has presented papers at a several conferences throughout her career on a variety of topics. As an Art Muse, she also leads guided tours to local art museum collections.
