SUMMARY:Shelter in Place: Exhibit at the Animation Guild (Opening Aug 1)
DESCRIPTION:Shelter in Place: Watercolor and Drawings by Eugene Salandra\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 1\, 2024\, 5pm-8pm \nIn Spring of 2020\, the COVID pandemic was spreading around the world. During March that year\, it descended here in the United States. Much information\, and misinformation\, was swirling about. We were told to solate. Keep away from others. Sanitize everything. Wipedown surfaces. Wash our hands. Wear masks. Shelter in place! This was challenging and painful enough for most of us\, but what of those among us who had no place to shelter? No place to isolate? No means to sanitize and wash? No place to etsupper except the nearest garbage bin? What were they expected to do? How were they expected to live through this threat that seemed serious enough to cause our entire society to grind to a screeching halt? Eugene Salandra hopes that his modest watercolors and drawings of our unhoused sisters and brothers might inspire reflection. Proceeds from the sale of artwork in this exhibit will be donated to organizations that work to support the unhoused\, such as Covenant House and the Ali Forney Center. \nEugene Salandra is an Italian-American native of New Jersey. He earned his BFA in Film and Television at New York University and studied classical figure drawing at the Art Students’ League of New York. He has worked for over three decades as an animation artist in television\, film\, and the internet\, primarily for Disney. His style and approach have been influenced by mentors John Canemaker and the late Tissa David. Among his interests are watercolor\, music\, theater\, puppetry\, crochet\, herbalism\, and cooking. Since 2017\, he has sung baritone with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. He also spent some time as a Benedictine monk.

SUMMARY:Ryan Hernandez @ Animation Guild's Gallery 839 (Opening Nov 2)
DESCRIPTION:ANIMATION ARTIST RYAN HERNANDEZ REIMAGINES LITTLE GOLDEN BOOKS\nNew exhibit at Galley 839 showcases a pop culture take on the classic children’s book series. \nWhat: One of Ryan Hernandez’ earliest memories is reading Little Golden Books. He loved how the stories and illustrations were so diverse. Even as an adult\, he finds himself wandering to the Little Golden Book rack at his local bookstore to see which volumes are available. A few years ago\, he was inspired to create his own book covers based on movies and TV shows that he loved growing up. He likes to use stories that he feels would never otherwise have a chance at becoming a Little Golden Book\, from Aliens to The Exorcist. \nWhen: Thursday\, November 2\, 2023\, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. PST \nNo RSVP necessary for opening night. The public is welcome to visit the gallery for the remainder of November during business hours\, but visitors must make requests in advance. Please email jupey.krusho@tag839.org \nWhere: Gallery 839\, The Animation Guild\n 1105 N. Hollywood Way\n Burbank\, CA 91505 \nRyan Hernandez grew up in Riverside\, Calif.\, and graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in Fine Arts Illustration. He freelances all over Los Angeles for studios such as Nickelodeon\, Warner Bros.\, Titmouse\, Disney\, and DreamWorks. His style is often described as humorous and lighthearted\, which is always great to hear because it’s how he views life and how he represents himself through his art. \n****** \nThe Animation Guild\, also known as Local 839 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE)\, was founded in 1952 as a labor union. Today\, the Guild represents more than 6\,000 talented artists\, technicians\, writers\, and production workers in the animation industry\, advocating for workers to improve wages and conditions. SUMMARY:The Art of Mo McMasters @ The Animation Guild (Opening Night June 1)
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY 839 SHOWCASES THE ART OF MO MCMASTERS\nGender Designation and the Malleability of Reality\nAnchor Exhibit Presented by The Animation Guild \nAnimation storyboard artist and illustrator Mo McMasters legally acquired a new name and gender designation during the course of creating art for “Take a Shot Every Time I Say ‘Liminal.’” This exploratory show is the fruit of that transition. \nMo McMasters is a storyboard artist and illustrator living in Los Angeles. Their work is informed by horror films\, tarot cards\, and growing up queer in Arkansas. \nJust as the map is not the territory\, neither is art reflective of reality. But art can expose reality’s malleability. This has been the central theme for McMasters’ creative practice over the course of the last three years\, a period of cosmic ego upheaval coinciding with a global pandemic. With reality’s threshold at its thinnest\, McMasters has explored the relationship between their internal domain and methods of externalizing it through comics\, illustrations\, and tarot cards. \nOPENING NIGHT Thursday\, June 1\, 2023\, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. PST\nNo RSVP necessary for opening night. The public is welcome to visit the gallery for the remainder of June during business hours\, but visitors must make requests in advance.
