SUMMARY:Catherine Bauknight at the Betsy Lueke
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Bauknight is an international News Photojournalist\, Editorial Documentary Photographer\, and Filmmaker\, based in Los Angeles. She is an Adjunct Professor of Photography and a Journalist. The distinguished photographer was one of the first women photojournalists in the South from outside of New York City to Atlanta and while based in Charlotte\, North Carolina she covered regional stories for Time Magazine\, Newsweek\, USA Today\, the New York Times\, People Magazine\, Rolling Stone Magazine and published in Life Magazine and other international publications. Many assignments were based on the “Old South” transitioning to the “New South” through economic growth and social integration. \nBauknight’s philosophy is simple: “From my experiences\, I believe that culture is the DNA\, the common denominator for communications between all people.” \nHer roots in photography began after studying oil painting at Arizona State University. She was given an older model Agfa Camera and a Photography 101 Book by her Father-in-Law\, Photographer Lavoy Bauknight\, for her birthday as she was getting on a plane to live in Germany for three years. It was while crossing the Tiber River Bridge of Rome a few weeks later that she was so overwhelmed by the design and beauty of the water\, the sky\, and the subtle colors of nature that she made an instant move for the camera and discovered the vibrant reality of the scene through the viewfinder. She shot her first photograph. In that insant\, she understood her heartfelt compassion for photography which has continued throughout her career. She says that photography becomes more powerful in content and design with the understanding of a language she refers to as “light writing”. “Photography evokes joy\, beauty\, sorrow\, empathy\, unity\, education\, and change in the human soul”\, Bauknight says.

SUMMARY:Shelter in Place: Exhibit at the Animation Guild (Opening Aug 1)
DESCRIPTION:Shelter in Place: Watercolor and Drawings by Eugene Salandra\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 1\, 2024\, 5pm-8pm \nIn Spring of 2020\, the COVID pandemic was spreading around the world. During March that year\, it descended here in the United States. Much information\, and misinformation\, was swirling about. We were told to solate. Keep away from others. Sanitize everything. Wipedown surfaces. Wash our hands. Wear masks. Shelter in place! This was challenging and painful enough for most of us\, but what of those among us who had no place to shelter? No place to isolate? No means to sanitize and wash? No place to etsupper except the nearest garbage bin? What were they expected to do? How were they expected to live through this threat that seemed serious enough to cause our entire society to grind to a screeching halt? Eugene Salandra hopes that his modest watercolors and drawings of our unhoused sisters and brothers might inspire reflection. Proceeds from the sale of artwork in this exhibit will be donated to organizations that work to support the unhoused\, such as Covenant House and the Ali Forney Center. \nEugene Salandra is an Italian-American native of New Jersey. He earned his BFA in Film and Television at New York University and studied classical figure drawing at the Art Students’ League of New York. He has worked for over three decades as an animation artist in television\, film\, and the internet\, primarily for Disney. His style and approach have been influenced by mentors John Canemaker and the late Tissa David. Among his interests are watercolor\, music\, theater\, puppetry\, crochet\, herbalism\, and cooking. Since 2017\, he has sung baritone with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. He also spent some time as a Benedictine monk.

SUMMARY:Ginger Lai "The World Between" at the Betsy Lueke (Opening Reception August 2)
DESCRIPTION:‘Art is about uplifting people. About making them happy. Art is about what is best in the world.’\n— Ginger Lai \nAbout The World Between: \nDr. Ginger Lai was born and raised in Taipei\, Taiwan. She immigrated to the US when she was sixteen years old and currently resides in Los Angeles\, California. Dr. Lai is a Doctor of Clinical Psychology\, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Southern California and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University. Dr. Lai integrates her therapy background in her art to suit the best of visual perceptions that engage with a unique expression to the world around us. \nTo Dr. Lai\, Art expresses what we can’t say\, no matter how expressive our vocabulary. Art and the artists who create it are boundless\, unfettered by rules\, exploring an expansive range of ideas that often seem contradictory and in opposition. In this show the artist explores two extremes inspired by an assortment of varied stimuli – from non-traditional sound baths to millennia’s old practice of daily meditation. The artist explores the abstract in oil and glitter alongside natural gemstones of custom jewelry and their contra points – cut and polished jewelry and the ordered symmetry of Plato’s perfect forms captured in pen and ink works of Sacred Geometry. From these opposing goalposts\, the artist establishes a framework of boundaries within which a host of future possibilities arise. Here are two worlds at opposite ends of visual perceptions\, signposts for a future between the abstract and the ordered. A stepping stone for exploring The World Between. \nFor more information\, please visit https://www.gingi.com/ \nThe Opening Reception is Friday\, August 2\, 2024\, 7:00 – 9:00 pm.\nThe gallery show runs August 2 – 22\, 2024

SUMMARY:Backstory: The Misfits at the Victory Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Using the title of a classic stage play or movie as inspiration\, storytellers and poets write poems and stories to be read aloud. Writers may pen a personal story inspired by the themes of the play. They may write in the voice of a character from the play and tell his or her back story. Or they may simply riff on the words in the title. Whatever the writer’s approach\, BACKSTORY has consistently been a fascinating and eclectic night of theatre. \nThe Misfits will be hosted by CARL WEINTRAUB \nTix available for in-person or zoom performances

SUMMARY:California Art League Presents "WATER" at the Betsy Lueke
DESCRIPTION:California Art League (CAL) was founded on the belief that when individual artists join together in creating their destinies\, their growth and impact are multiplied in their lives and throughout the world. With visual art exhibitions\, ongoing education\, and creative interaction\, we empower artists to fulfill their highest potential. CAL welcomes all levels of artists to join us whether they are professionals or beginners. Painters\, sculptors\, photographers\, and collage artists are welcome. All genres\, including abstract modern art\, traditional realism\, portraits\, still life\, landscape\, cityscape\, wildlife\, and everything in between are accepted. \nCalifornia Art League was originally founded as The Valley Artists Guild (VAG) in 1948 by the sculptor Henry Van Wolf (1898–1982). Van Wolf had a vision of uniting the scattered artists in the San Fernando Valley area. He saw the need for a fine arts community\, not as a personal money-making scheme\, but as a way for artist members to become stronger. Through exhibitions\, affordable educational workshops\, and social events\, the artist members of the VAG quickly flourished and grew in numbers. To promote our progress\, we changed our name to the California Art League in 2012. \nNow in the twenty-first century\, artists continue to reflect their own poetic joys and interests through the California Art League\, which now carries the torch of a flame lit long ago by people who knew art would always matter.

SUMMARY:Jim Meskimen's JIMPRESSIONS at the Garry Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Jim Meskimen’s connection to Garry Marshall began in 1972\, when his real life mom\, actress Marion Ross\, was cast as Marion Cunningham in the iconic television show Happy Days. As an actor himself\, Jim first appeared in a Garry project at age 17 — featured in the iconic “Jump the Shark” episode of Happy Days. Jim returned to work with Garry again in two of Marshall’s films\, including a favorite of Garry’s\, The Other Sister. \nMeskimen has been a professional actor/impressionist for over 35 years. His ‘voices’ have been heard in animation (Family Guy\, Phineas & Ferb\, Marvel Avengers Assemble)\, talk shows (Jimmy Kimmel\, Bill Maher\, Jay Leno and David Letterman)\, and on scripted TV (For All Mankind\, Mom\, The Big Bang Theory\, Night Court). \nGMT’s presenting of JIMPRESSIONS showcases special stories of Jim’s early years being raised by the real Mrs. C\, his days on set with Ron Howard on his films The Grinch and Apollo 13\, moving homage to Robin Williams\, and original songs in a parade of celebrity voices. Plus audience interaction with Jim onstage in an exciting\, improvised game of “Movie Line Trivia!” \nImprovisational\, musical and absolutely hilarious\, the mind-boggling\, quick-changing personas of JIMPRESSIONS is a brilliant glimpse into so many of our treasured voices in entertainment and beyond\, all performed by the man the Australian Today Show called “the world’s best impressionist.” \nRun time approximately 75 minutes with no intermission.
