SUMMARY:Backstory: Death Takes a Holiday / Meet Joe Black at the Victory Theatre
DESCRIPTION:“It’s December\, which means BackStory is BACK and this time we’re celebrating TEN YEARS of this show! Hosted by the fabulous Carl Weintraub\, the theme is inspired by Death Take a Holiday and its remake\, Meet Joe Black. \nMark your calendars because you won’t wanna miss this one! We’ll see you at 7:30 on Sunday\, December 14\, at the historic Victory Theatre!” \nUsing the title of a classic stage play or movie as inspiration\, storytellers and poets write poems and stories to be read aloud. Writers may pen a personal story inspired by the themes of the play. They may write in the voice of a character from the play and tell his or her back story. Or they may simply riff on the words in the title. Whatever the writer’s approach\, BACKSTORY has consistently been a fascinating and eclectic night of theatre. \nIn Person Tickets – https://ci.ovationtix.com/35020/store/donations/57058\nZoom Tickets – https://ci.ovationtix.com/35020/store/donations/57059

SUMMARY:The Making of Mary Poppins with Disney History Institute scholar Todd James Pierce
DESCRIPTION:MAKING MARY POPPINS explores the unknown story of one of Disney’s most beloved films\, including the songwriters who brought it to life. \nFor many of us of a certain age\, Mary Poppins was one of the most memorable film experiences of our youth — this classic Disney film was the movie-going sensation of the holiday season of 1964. Filmed on the studio lot here in Burbank just a few blocks away\, Mary Poppins is a part of our local history. In an illustrated talk\, Disney History Institute scholar Todd James Pierce will put you in the room as Walt Disney\, the Sherman brothers\, P.J. Travers\, and others\, giving an inside view of their ideas for the development of the narrative and songs for the film. You will be there as the film is created. \nLong before Mary Poppins danced across the rooftops of Edwardian London and into the hearts of millions\, Robert and Richard Sherman were struggling songwriters in Los Angeles\, trying to find their voices—and their futures. In MAKING MARY POPPINS: The Sherman Brothers\, Walt Disney\, and the Creation of the Classic Film [W. W. Norton & Company; November 11\, 2025]\, Pierce traces the unlikely path that brought the Sherman brothers to Walt Disney’s attention\, and how their personal history\, musical genius\, and emotional lives shaped the film’s unforgettable songs and surprising storyline. \nFrom their early days writing novelty tunes to the high-stakes drama of working with P. L. Travers and Walt Disney himself\, the Sherman brothers’ story is rich with behind-the-scenes intrigue\, creative breakthroughs\, and quiet triumphs. Their work on Mary Poppins not only launched their careers—it transformed Disney’s live-action division and influenced an entire era of musical filmmaking. \nWhile the Shermans and their songs are at the heart of the book\, there are also lively anecdotes about the casting of the movie\, the innovative special effects\, and the relationship between Mary Poppins and the larger Disney world. MAKING MARY POPPINS tells the fascinating story behind an iconic film. A must-read for Disney fans\, film buffs\, and lovers of classic musicals\, this is the definitive account of how one magical nanny came to life and helped change the face of Hollywood. \nThe book will be available for sale and the author will host a signing after the program. A great gift for the holidays!\nRSVP at https://burbank.libnet.info/event/14864592

SUMMARY:Kevin McCants and Karen Rosa: Under One Roof at the Betsy Lueke - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Under one Roof – Karen Rosa & Kevin Mcacnts\nJanuary 9 – 29\, 2026\nThe opening Reception is Friday\, January 9\, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm\, and will include music and light refreshments. \nThe Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the work of Kevin L. McCants and Karen Rosa\, two artists whose practices reflect lifelong dedication to craft\, observation\, and personal reinvention. \nKevin L. McCants is an African American painter\, teacher\, and musician based in Toluca Lake. His artistic journey began at the age of six and was shaped by formal studies in fashion illustration and commercial art at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. With more than 18 years of experience teaching painters\, McCants has guided students through private instruction\, online courses\, and ongoing workshops at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery and the McGroarty Art Center. Kevin’s core philosophy stresses the critical importance of strong drawing skills as the foundation of fine art. \nKaren Rosa returned to her art practice after a 25-year career working with Animals in Film and Television\, retiring from animal welfare to reconnect with her first love—art. She is currently a School Tour Docent at the Getty Museums. The pandemic provided the catalyst to establish a dedicated studio and resume painting in earnest. Rosa’s background includes work as a textile designer and stylist for Burlington Industries in New York City\, as well as Owner and Art Director of ADCOM\, Advertising and Communications\, in Florida. She holds a BFA\, cum laude\, from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia\, pursued studies in Florence\, Italy\, attended the MBA program at Hunter College\, and completed UCLA coursework in International Business. \nTogether\, McCants and Rosa bring distinct yet complementary perspectives shaped by decades of professional experience\, teaching\, and creative exploration. This exhibition celebrates disciplined craftsmanship\, lifelong learning\, and the enduring power of artistic expression.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Jazz ft. Angela O’Neill\, Outrageous8 with Keri Kelsey
DESCRIPTION:“Get ready to swing into your Saturday with an unforgettable afternoon of big band jazz\, outrageous energy\, and iconic tunes.\nGet ready to swing into your Saturday with an unforgettable afternoon of big band jazz\, outrageous energy\, and iconic tunes—presented by Angela O’Neill & the Outrageous8\, now celebrating 10 years of swingin’! \nThis month\, we welcome the incomparable Keri Kelsey — a nationally celebrated vocalist whose life story is as dazzling as her stage presence. She’s performed everywhere from Tavern on the Green to the House of Blues\, shared the stage with Melissa Manchester\, hosted the longest-running open mic in the country\, and collected enough extraordinary life experiences to fill a memoir: riding tigers\, swinging 35 feet above the Rose Parade\, traveling with the circus\, raising a Hollywood stuntman\, and somehow still earning a reputation as “the definition of glamour.” \nThe Outrageous8 features an all-star lineup of LA’s top musicians\, including custom arrangements by Harry Smallenburg and Rocky Davis\, and music direction by Sam Morgan\, son of touring legend David Morgan (Three Dog Night). From Grammy-winning sidemen to jazz veterans who’ve played with The Rolling Stones\, Cher\, and the Honeydrippers—this group brings heat\, history\, and serious chops to the stage. \nAngela O’Neill\, a UCLA Theater Arts alum and former classical oboist\, has produced hundreds of shows with The Outrageous8. A versatile performer\, she’s sung jazz\, country\, and rock\, and currently sings with multiple 18-piece big bands. Angela is also the driving force behind Outrageous8 Records\, which she launched five years ago\, producing six albums for the band and additional projects for bandmates Paul Litteral and Ron Cyger. \nPlease note that there is a $35 food and beverage minimum at the venue on the day of the event.
