SUMMARY:"Millennials Are Killing Musicals" at the Colony Theatre
DESCRIPTION:MILLENNIALS ARE KILLING MUSICALS \nBOOK\, MUSIC\, AND LYRICS BY NICO JUBER\nDIRECTED BY TONY AWARD NOMINEE KRISTIN HANGGI\nMUSICAL DIRECTION\, ARRANGEMENTS\, AND ORCHESTRATIONS BY ANTHONY LUCCA \nWORLD PREMIERE PRIOR TO ITS MOVE TO NEW YORK\nAPRIL 30 – MAY 17\, 2026 \nThe Colony Theatre in Burbank\, CA (Heather Provost\, Producing Artistic Director) announced today it will present the world premiere production of Millennials Are Killing Musicals in its 2026 season before the show heads to New York. The original musical comedy\, with book\, music\, and lyrics by Nico Juber\, will play a limited engagement from April 30 – May 17. \nThe production will be directed by Tony Award-nominee Kristin Hanggi\, best known for the Broadway and global smash hit Rock of Ages. Anthony Lucca (King of Pangea) will serve as music director\, arranger\, and orchestrator. Casting is by Michael Donovan\, CSA\, and Richie Ferris\, CSA. Design team and casting news will be announced later. \nWith a contemporary pop-rock score\, this entirely original musical comedy offers a fierce\, funny look at identity in the age of social media. Brenda\, a single millennial mom\, just wants to do better “adulting” (like the seemingly perfect Jake’s mom at her daughter’s school)\, when her younger #influencer sister Katrina shows up eight months pregnant and totally unprepared for motherhood. The three women work to shed the Greek Chorus of social media filters on their lives to achieve their dreams. \nSaid Provost\, “The Colony Theatre is truly proud to champion new work\, especially a New York-bound musical from one of LA’s own best and brightest. Millennials Are Killing Musicals is sharp\, funny\, and deeply human. It reflects the moment we’re all living in with humor\, honesty\, and heart\, reminding us that great storytelling connects every generation.” \nSaid Hanggi\, “This show asks what’s real in a world curated by algorithms and how we connect when we reveal our messy\, brilliant\, unfiltered humanity. Comedy is our way in. Millennials Are Killing Musicals is a love letter to imperfection and to women telling their stories on their own terms.”

SUMMARY:Disneyland and the Rise of Automation - Book Discussion at the Buena Vista Library
DESCRIPTION:Roland Betancourt and Imagineer Tom Morris explore how visionary engineers adapted postwar industrial automation to create a new kind of entertainment experience for the opening of Disneyland in 1955. \nWhen Disneyland opened to the public in 1955\, it demystified the hidden world of factory automation through its extraordinary new attractions. In Disneyland and the Rise of Automation\, Roland Betancourt tells the story of how the visionary engineers and designers at Disney transformed the technologies of the postwar assembly line into an entertainment experience unlike anything the world had ever seen. \nEssential reading for anyone interested in engineering\, corporate histories\, or popular culture\, Disneyland and the Rise of Automation invites us to consider how technology and the logic of automation become integrated into our lives through entertainment. \nThis groundbreaking\, deeply researched book explores how Walt Disney and his designers aestheticized midcentury automation and computer science to create Disneyland and transform its offerings. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the development of them parks and how the reshaped postwar America.\n—Todd James Pierce\, author of Three Years in Wonderland: The Disney Brothers\, C.V. Wood\, and the Making of the Great American Theme Park and Making Mary Poppins. \nDeeply researched\, brilliantly written\, and wonderfully illustrated\, Disneyland and the Rise of Automation is a tour de force. Betancourt outlines the key role automation has played in the history of theme parks at large and Disneyland in particular\, filling an important gap in US postwar and Disney history. This is a must-read for scholars and fans alike. —Sabrina Mittermeier\, author of A Cultural History of the Disneyland Theme Parks \nCopies of Disneyland and the Rise of Automation will be available at this event.

SUMMARY:CALL FOR ARTISTS - Compass Tree Park Public Art Installation
DESCRIPTION:The City of Burbank is issuing a Call for Artists as part of its long-standing Art in Public Places Program\, seeking qualified professional artists to submit proposals for the Compass Tree Park Public Art Installation. \nThis new opportunity is part of the broader Burbank Channel Bikeway Public Art Project\, an initiative to integrate art along the Burbank Channel Bikeway\, a one-mile multi-use path that serves cyclists and pedestrians while connecting neighborhoods\, commercial areas\, and regional bike networks. \nThe selected artist will design\, fabricate\, and install a permanent\, freestanding artwork at Compass Tree Park (picture below)\, a small but historically significant site along the bikeway. The Park commemorates an 1817 landmark where Spanish Padres planted four sycamore trees to mark the cardinal directions\, serving as a navigational point between early California missions. Today\, the Park features compass tiles\, shaded seating\, and serves as a popular entry point and rest area along the bikeway. \nThe City seeks artwork that reflects the Park’s rich history while celebrating the Bikeway’s role as both a transportation corridor and a community recreation space. The installation should engage visitors\, complement the surrounding environment\, and be constructed from durable\, low-maintenance materials suitable for long-term outdoor display. \nIn addition to the Compass Tree Park installation\, the City anticipates future opportunities for additional artworks along the bikeway corridor. \nSubmissions will be accepted from April 24\, 2026 to June 25\, 2026\, at 11:59 pm.
