Amy Smith
Multidisciplinary Artist
Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?
I’m a professional artist and curator focusing on sustainability through 2D and 3D mixed media artworks. I create large and small scale collages, murals, curate and host community events.
How did you first become interested in art?
I liked to draw a lot when I was younger but it was just for fun. But when I moved to Los Angeles I found a good outlet creating digital art. I started out making digital collages while working in the art department in the entertainment industry. I learned a lot about what’s possible in creative fields and loved seeing everyone use their creativity together to produce the most amazing outcomes. Truly a life changing experience. I think that gave me the confidence to become an artist and find a group of artists I connected with.
How does art enrich a community, and what are some ways people can engage with art in Burbank?
Art is a universal language that has the ability to bring people together. There are many ways to engage with art, especially in Los Angeles. You don’t have to go to a museum to see art, you can go to local artist-run galleries in your neighborhood, an outdoor art market or local pop up events. Each city has a vibrant artist community, Burbank has played an important role by providing Community Arts Grants. I’m grateful to have received this grant to curate a show in Burbank on Nov 21st. It’s a celebration of sustainability, community, and creativity. By combining art-making with environmental consciousness, A Holiday Celebration of Art & Renewal reflects a commitment to mindful consumption and shared joy. This event is about repurposing, reconnecting, and reimagining what the holidays can look like when we center creativity and sustainability. It’s a chance for the community to come together, learn from one another, and leave with something meaningful — whether that’s a repaired jacket, a handmade ornament, or simply a renewed sense of connection. Would love for the community to come check it out https://partiful.com/e/MRbsRdaHDUz4QWVprlT9
If you could share with our community one thing about art and/or your creative process, what would it be?
I think it’s important to talk about the Slow Movement. This is a movement that emphasizes meaningful connection, decision making with intention, and quality over quantity. I relate to this by making tactile collages using recycled, upcycled, packing, materials, found objects, and other would be discarded materials.
