In addition to ongoing and special exhibitions, the Autry continues to provide a wide range of programs, special activities, and events designed for a variety of interests and all ages. The Education Department is dedicated to enriching the experience of all visitors through thoughtful, entertaining, and engaging classes, programs, and activities. Education staff and volunteers connect with more than 30,000 visitors every year, many of them students from LAUSD and the surrounding school districts.

The Video Production Department at Burbank High Schools offers a wide range of opportunities for students. The all digital environment prepares all students for success in the commercial world of film, television and multimedia. Learning advanced camera techniques for quality productions is the first step in professional development that all children utilize before editing process begins with Adobe Premiere. Moreover, the inclusion of music and sound effects create the realistic environments that make for quality video productions. Upon completion of filming and editing students can enhance production with the application of special effects and compositing using green screen technology using Adobe After Effects. Students are encouraged to enter film festivals across the country and many BHS video production students have gone on to continued learning at public and private institutions for film production and are currently employed at small and large production studios.

Director Michael Stanley has been our passionate and hardworking Instrumental Music Director since 2006. Mr. Stanley was born in Virginia, but grew up in Southern California. He began his musical studies on guitar but soon switched to the French Horn, studying with Louise MacGillivray and Richard Todd, among others. He earned his BA in Music Summa cum Laude from UCLA in 1995 and subsequently taught Instrumental Music at Walter Reed MS in Studio City for eight years. There his groups earned consistent Superior ratings and his Jazz Band was featured at the CMEA All-State Convention.
As a conductor, he has a wide variety of experience that includes founding and directing the Stanley Wind Ensemble, an elite wind band in the Ventura County area, conducting numerous pit orchestras throughout Southern California, and many workshops taught by such notable conductors as Kenneth Kiesler, Marin Alsop, and Keith Brion. He earned his Master of Music in Conducting from CSU Long Beach in 2007, where he studied under Dr. Richard Rintoul. His thesis project was a complete, staged performance of Igor Stravinsky’s Histoire du Soldat. Famed percussionist and composer William Kraft, who recorded the work under Stravinsky’s baton, lauded this performance with a rousing “Bravo!”
Percussion Instructor Barney Lane studied at North Texas State and has 20 years of film and TV music experience. He has also taught in the Burbank schools for many years and his own children went through the BHS IMA program.

The Burbank High School Dance Program currently has three levels of instruction – Dance 1, Dance 2, and Dance 3. Dance 1 is an introduction class for beginning dancers. Dance 2 is for intermediate/advanced dancers, and Dance 3 is for the Burbank High School Dance Team, Unleashed. Styles of dance covered in the program include, but are not limited to: Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Social, World, Cultural, and Tap Dance. Students in the dance program are not only exposed to these styles of dance, but they are given the opportunity to perform in an annual dance concert in the BHS auditorium. This concert is open to friends, family, the school community, and the community of Burbank.

Artistic expression through dance can take many forms and styles — not every student will become a classical ballerina. As students at BSB develop a solid foundation of technique through their ballet training, we encourage our students to broaden their vocabulary of dance movement & skills by studying additional dance styles. For this reason, BSBs class offerings are diverse. We also look forward to offering Master Classes throughout the year that will give students an opportunity to explore other cultures and styles of dance.

The Burbank Youth Summer Theatre Institute is a summer Shakespeare theatrical summer camp open to all comers in ages 9 and up. This program offers participants workshops led by professional theatrical teaching artists on the campus of Woodbury University. The BYSTI players perform, design all costumes, sets, and props, and learn staging stills like sound effects, sword play, and movement. The Freshi goal is to introduce digital media literacy and education to youth grades K-12.
Freshi places cameras and computers right into the hands of young digital creators, allowing them to imagine, plan, shoot, edit and play their own films, animations, comic books and games. Through the very nature of digital media creation, kids develop planning skills, teamwork, and patience. It is a skills-building program that extends into all areas of the their lives.
Freshi programs are currently active in hundreds of schools and organizations across the United States, and with the introduction of Freshi Learning Online, a course-based digital media training program, Freshi can reach students and teachers around the world.

The John Burroughs High School Instrumental Music Program aims to provide outstanding music education through the exploration of instrumental music performance in all of it’s genres. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to study music at the college level, become an avocational musician, and enjoy a lifetime of appreciation of all forms of music. The music program provides 4 main groups: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. Additional groups include, Chamber Ensembles, Honor Groups, Drum Line, Marching Band and Auxiliary. All groups are supported in combination by the Burbank Unified School District and the Instrumental Music Association.

The City of Burbank Park, Recreation, and Community Services Division manages Burbank’s Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (Burbank RSVP). RSVP operates Joslyn Adult Center, an adult services center for people who are 55 and older. Joslyn is a place for adults to be active in the community and receive support from other adults 55+ and professionals. Joslyn organizes day trips, senior activities, social events, and volunteer opportunities to keep Burbank senior citizens active and involved in the community. Woodbury’s Art of Architecture program is designed for children and teens ages 8 to 17 with classes taught by architects and designers at Woodbury University School of Architecture. Taught as an art-based class, students are introduced to the vocabulary, structure, and process of an architecture studio. Engaging and inventive, the classes are hands-on with model building, drawing and creative thinking. The Creative Arts program includes art, dance and drama. Art that is created is inspired by famous artists and their styles, multicultures and a wide variety of materials. Dance classes include a blending of contemporary styles. Acting classes include games, improv and scene study. All classes meet throughout the school year and culminate in an art gallery and in performances at our annual Arts Showcase in May.

The Burbank Arts & Education Foundation’s mission is to ensure every student in Burbank public schools has access to a quality visual and performing arts education as part of their core curriculum.
